Checker flooring – TPE
TPE checker flooring is a modern version of classic checker‑plate patterned flooring, manufactured from a thermoplastic elastomer instead of traditional SBR rubber. It is a thermoplastically formed product supplied in rolls of standard lengths and widths, which makes it easy to cut by hand with a utility knife and to adapt to the shape of rooms, traffic routes or workstations. The use of a TPE compound provides lower surface weight, an attractive visual finish and improved durability in environments with fluctuating temperatures and elevated humidity.
TPE checker flooring effectively dampens vibrations and noise, improves walking comfort and offers high traction thanks to its pronounced, directional surface pattern. It is suitable as a finish for concrete floors in garages, workshops, vehicle cargo areas, ramps and working platforms, as well as in corridors and technical rooms where anti‑slip properties and ease of cleaning are important. Compared to checker flooring made from SBR rubber, the TPE version offers better resistance to weathering and increased resistance to oil‑based contamination, while the material odour is usually milder. TPE checker flooring is an industrial‑grade product – immediately after unpacking a noticeable material odour may be present, which gradually fades over time with adequate ventilation of the room.
Application conditions and limitations
The TPE compound used in checker flooring provides better resistance to atmospheric factors than classic SBR rubber, allowing the product to be used in partially outdoor areas or locations occasionally exposed to external conditions. However, despite its improved resistance to petroleum‑based products, TPE is not a fully chemically inert material – for long‑term exposure to aggressive media it is recommended to carry out a trial under actual service conditions. The typical operating temperature range of TPE floorings corresponds to standard workshop and garage applications; for use in extreme temperatures or in the presence of strong chemicals, it is advisable to check the technical specification, test the product on a small section and select an appropriate fixing method (loose‑laid or bonded to the substrate) depending on the expected loads.
