Zenith Centaur Red abrasion resistant rubber sheets
Zenith Centaur Red is a soft, abrasion resistant natural rubber (para) sheet intended for wear protection wherever fine grained, highly abrasive material slides across the working surface. The distinctive red colour and the smooth finish on both sides make it easier to check the degree of lining wear during inspections. A hardness of 45 Shore A ±5 combined with elongation at break of 600% produces an exceptionally resilient material: the rubber bounces impact energy back instead of absorbing it rigidly, and its surface is far less prone to caking. This is precisely why soft qualities are the recommended solution for wet abrasion and for wet materials where build up blocks the material flow. A flexible lining flexes under load and shows a self cleaning effect.
The sheet combines low hardness with very good mechanical parameters: tensile strength of 15 MPa, abrasion loss of 100 mm³ (DIN 53516 / ISO 4649), specific gravity of 1.1 g/cm³ and a service range from -30°C to +70°C. Additional compound parameters include tear resistance of approximately 30 kg/cm (DIN 53515) and compression set of max. 30% (70°C / 24 h / 25%). High tensile strength has a direct influence on service life under sliding abrasion. The stronger the bonds between the polymers, the harder it is for material sliding across the surface to break them and cause tearing. SCP offers thicknesses of 6, 8 and 10 mm in rolls of 2 × 10 m. The 2 m width means fewer seams on large surfaces and faster installation. Other thicknesses within the 1 to 25 mm range and the 1.4 m width are available on request, as is the variant with a factory applied bonding layer for cold bonding.
Centaur Red is used as lining for chutes and launders, including slurry chutes and wet transport, lining for pipework and bends in pneumatic and hydraulic transport, lining for loading hoppers, tanks and silos, guarding for conveyor transfer points, and also as lining for elevator buckets, where preventing material build up is critical. The material is also well suited to fabrication, to cutting skirts, guards, sealing components and linings in non standard shapes. Typical industries include sand and gravel extraction and processing plants, hydrotransport and slurry processing installations, cement plants, gold and metal ore mines with wet ore processing, open pit mines and quarries, as well as chemical and fertiliser plants. For a complete solution in the transfer zone it is worth adding the remaining conveyor accessories to the lining: side skirt sealing strips, dust sealing, impact bars, pulley lagging and conveyor belt scrapers.
Conditions of use and limitations
Natural rubber is not resistant to mineral oils, fuels, petroleum products and solvents. In such environments NBR compounds or polyurethane are the more suitable choice. The material should not operate in permanent contact with concentrated acids and bases, nor at temperatures exceeding the upper limit of the service range of natural rubber compounds. Resistance to ozone and to dilute acids and bases is rated as fair. Because NR is sensitive to atmospheric ageing, prolonged exposure to UV radiation during plant shutdowns should be limited. The soft 45 Shore A quality is not the optimal choice where coarse, sharp material falls onto the lining from a considerable height. In such zones compounds with a hardness of approximately 60 Shore A will perform better, possibly in combination with impact bars. When bonding the lining to steel, the rubber surface must be prepared in accordance with the instructions of the adhesive system, or the variant with a factory applied bonding layer should be selected.
